Mid-Ulster District Council

Young Resilience and Community Relations Programme

Programme Objectives:

Learn Spark’s ConnectED service collaborated with Mid-Ulster District Council over five years to deliver a Young Resilience and Community Relations programme across the Magherafelt, Dungannon, and Cookstown areas. The initiative aimed to:

  1. Forge stronger relationships among local schools, teachers, and students.
  2. Build student resilience by empowering older students to mentor younger peers.
  3. Showcase the council’s impact, enhancing community awareness and appreciation.

Approach:

To meet these objectives, we developed a comprehensive peer-led programme focused on reading support. Annually, up to 20 schools participated, each selecting 8–10 students to be trained as mentors, with high demand often leading to requests for additional spots. The schools were organized into five community-representative cohorts to foster cross-community collaboration.

The programme included:

  1. Training Sessions: Students attended interactive training sessions with team-building activities and skills development in mentoring for paired reading.
  2. Teacher Guidance: Teachers received detailed guidance on project expectations, timelines, and milestones to support smooth implementation.
  3. Ongoing Support: Schools had access to continuous support, including a ‘Student Support Booklet’ and two demonstration videos. Regular check-ins and additional training sessions were also provided throughout the year.

The programme adapted to changing conditions:

  • 2019/20: 17 schools participated with in-person training.
  • 2020/21: 15 schools joined virtually due to Covid-19.
  • 2021–2024: 16–17 schools each year, utilizing a hybrid model with both in-person and virtual options.

Outcomes:

Over five years, the programme has trained over 2,500 students, significantly enhancing their mentoring skills, reading abilities, and confidence. The programme’s success has also spurred its expansion into other regions of Northern Ireland, demonstrating its adaptability and impact on student resilience and community relations.
