details on

each of the TOOLS

  1. STUDY TIMETABLE (AFTER SCHOOL) – When assessments or exams are not due imminently, use this timetable to divide up time between homework, studying, socialising, exercising, relaxing and hobbies/interests. When assessments or exams are close, increase the time for studying and include names of subjects/topics.
  2. STUDY TIMETABLE (STUDY LEAVE) – As students approach exams, many go on 'study leave' and must manage their entire day independently. Balancing socialising, exercising, relaxing, and studying is crucial during this time. This timetable, divided into 30-minute blocks, helps structure the day more effectively.
  3. POMODORO TIME TRACKER – A Pomodoro Time Tracker is used to enhance productivity by breaking work into intervals, typically 25 minutes long, separated by short breaks. This technique aims to improve focus and efficiency while reducing mental fatigue and procrastination. By tracking these intervals, time can be better managed and a steadier workflow maintained throughout tasks.
  4. SPACED REPETITION TIME TRACKER – A Spaced Repetition Time Tracker is used when studying to schedule optimal review intervals for learning material. This technique enhances long-term retention by spacing out review sessions over increasing intervals, which reinforces memory retention and prevents forgetting. By tracking these intervals, study sessions can be more effectively organised, improving recall  of information over time.

  1. TARGET 100 – 10 – This tool can be used to condense important notes, by narrowing down on what is really important. By targeting 100 words and then 10 words, understanding and recall can really be developed
  2. CORNELL NOTE-TAKING STYLE – This tool can be used to condense and organise important notes. The method also involves a requirement to cover and recall key notes which allows for strengthened understanding and faster recall of information.
  3. THE NINE BOX GRID – This tool can be used to summarise notes on a topic or subject. It can be used with or without class notes or textbooks. It is designed to encourage the selection and prioritisation of the really important information. Additionally, a variety of interesting study approaches can be used to fill each of the different boxes to really develop understanding and recall of key information.
  4. SPIDER DIAGRAM – This tool can be used to organise data and information in a logical way, showing connections and relationships. It also allows deeper exploration of topics/concept by breaking them down further and further as they move out from the centre.
  5. MIND MAPPING – This tool can be used to explore a topic by breaking it down into component parts (sections). Through the use of key words, colour and pictures greater understanding can be developed and faster recall of information achieved.
  6. CONTENT/REACTION NOTES – This tool can be used to outline the main ideas, messages, and concepts for different topics. It allows key information to be prioritised, helping to ‘chunk the learning’ and make it less overwhelming. It also encourages deeper thinking about what is being read, enabling more effective processing of information.
  7. POWER NOTES – This tool can be used to outline the main ideas, messages, and concepts of various topics. It creates links between different pieces of information, aiding comprehensive understanding. This method encourages selectivity and prioritisation of key information, ensuring important points are highlighted and retained. By organising notes in a structured manner, Power Notes simplify complex subjects and enhance recall of essential details.
  8. HIERARCHY CHART – This tool can be used to visualise the different elements of a system, process, concept, or organisation. It helps to decide on the most important elements and identify the connections that can be made between them.

  1. THE CLOCK – This tool is useful for developing an understanding of cyclical processes. By filling in each segment of the clock with a part of the process in the order that it occurred, from 1 to 12, it enhances comprehension and strengthens the ability to recall key information.
  2. CIRCLE CYCLE – This tool is useful for rehearsing a process or sequence that repeats itself, helping to strengthen recall. It clearly lays out the stages or steps of the process one after another, eventually returning to the original first stage or step.
  3. TIMELINE – This tool displays specific events in chronological order, typically arranged from left to right with dates. It is especially effective for developing an understanding of historical events by visually representing major occurrences over a period of time, making it easier to grasp their sequence and context.
  4. BLOCKCHAIN – The Blockchain method visually represents a process, progression, or set of instructions that need to be learned. It breaks down different steps or pieces of information, making it easier to chunk the learning and understand the material.

  1. FISHBONE DIAGRAM – The tool breaks down a topic into smaller parts to explore its underlying causes. This visual method organises complex information into categories, making it easier to analyse and understand. By dissecting issues into manageable components, it helps strengthen recall and comprehension of important details.
  2. FISHBONE DIAGRAM (CAUSE AND EFFECT) – The tool explores the likely causes of an effect (outcome or event). Once the possible or probable causes have been identified, it allows consideration of the root cause(s) to reach an evaluative conclusion.
  3. ELABORATIVE INTERROGATION TABLE – This tool helps explore a topic at the analytical (analysis) and evaluative levels. Central to this tool is asking questions about ‘how’ and ‘why’ things work and then producing answers to these questions. The ‘why’ questions encourage analytical thinking, and the ‘how’ questions promote evaluative thinking, both of which are higher-order thinking skills.
  4. BRACE MAP – This tool can be used to analyse the different parts of a topic or situation demontrating relationships and connections. It helps break up what is being studied and makes the information less overwhelming.
  5. PROBLEM / SOLUTION DIAGRAM – This tool explores various choices and options for solving a problem. Each possible approach is analysed by looking at the ‘pros’ and ‘cons’ before presenting a final evidence-based conclusion. This method supports the writing of essays or extended pieces of writing.

  1. COMPARE AND CONTRAST DIAGRAM – This tool explores the similarities and differences between two concepts or issues. The lined approach can be preferable for those who find the unstructured nature of the traditional Venn Diagram less suitable.
  2. VENN DIAGRAM – This tool shows the relationships (similarities and differences) among things or finite groups of things. Traditionally used to illustrate the relationship between two concepts, there’s also space to add additional circles to represent multiple relationships.
  3. VENN DIAGRAM (LINED) – This tool displays the relationships (similarities and differences) among concepts. However, it uses a lined approach, which can be preferable for those who find the traditional Venn Diagram too unstructured.
  4. T-CHART DIAGRAM – This method contrasts two different aspects of topics. A T-Chart features a large heading at the top with the title and two columns side by side, filled with information relevant to each topic. It visually resembles the letter T and serves as a tool for being selective, organising, and prioritising information.

  1. PARAGRAPH ESSAY PLANNER – This method provides structure for writing essays and extended pieces of writing. It allows arguments to be clearly set out, leading to a well-formed evaluative conclusion.
  2. ON THE ONE HAND TABLE – This method offers structure for writing essays and extended pieces of writing. It allows arguments for and against to be clearly set out, leading to a clear evidence-based conclusion.
  3. SURVEY, QUESTION, READ, RECITE & REVIEW (SQ3R) – This method ensures active engagement with subject materials and helps maintain focus. It encourages reflection on learning and critical thinking about the reading material.
  4. PREVIEW, QUESTION, READ, REFLECT, RECITE, REVIEW (PQ4R) – This method ensures active engagement with subject materials and helps maintain focus. It promotes reflection on learning and critical thinking about the reading material.
  5. PERSUASION MAP – This tool can be used to plan out a claim or argument for debates, speeches, or a piece of persuasive writing, or to plan out a hypothesis or proposed solution to a problem.

  1. BUBBLE MAP – This method serves as a visual learning tool in mathematics, aiding in the visualisation and display of information related to a central concept and problem. It is particularly useful for breaking down the different steps or strategies needed to solve a problem, and for identifying common mistakes and underlying misunderstandings.
  2. STEP BY STEP DIAGRAM – This method outlines the steps required to reach a solution to a problem. By clearly presenting these steps, it helps to avoid mistakes. Traditionally used for mathematical and scientific problems, it can also be applied to address social, environmental, and global issues, such as overpopulation and climate change.
  3. THE FRAYER MODEL – This model is a powerful visual and interactive learning tool in mathematics. It aids in understanding and remembering key concepts by breaking them down into definitions, characteristics, examples, and non-examples. This structured approach enhances comprehension and retention, making mathematical ideas more accessible and easier to recall.
  4. LINE IT UP GRID – This method helps organise and align numbers or variables in mathematics, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. It is particularly useful when working with multi-digit numbers and helps to avoid mistakes.
