Think of the amount of time we spend marking and providing feedback to students. The endless hours writing comments that, in most cases, are not read, and in many cases are not understood – not to mention the limited amount of action taken by students in that piece of work or in the next, as a result of the marking and feedback. What is that time spent marking and providing feedback for? Is it to please senior leaders, parents/guardians, or, in the event of a surprise, the Inspectorate?
This course takes a practical look at the process of commenting on work (written and verbal) and helps to regain perspective on the objective – to support improvement in the students’ understanding (content or process). We explore the latest research from around the world, and suggest more effective approaches that put the focus on learner improvement. Teachers will leave the course with a more positive perspective that, maybe, the time spent marking can be time well spent.
