How many of us regularly plan lessons in the same way we did during our training? Do we still plan at all…or do we just ‘wing it’, or leave it to the last minute? If we do manage to plan lessons, do we even use them or keep them in a file for the Inspectorate? It can be hard to find the time to effectively plan lessons when there are so many other administrative burdens on our time. Successful lesson planning is vital for high-quality learning and teaching – allowing for structure, demonstration of learning, progression, meeting pupils’ needs and effective classroom management. These courses goes to the heart of what makes an outstanding lesson and can give you a template to follow and replicate in order to make planning more effective and efficient.
Based on the latest research and experiences from teachers around the world, we explore the component parts of a high-quality lesson. We consider the opening explanation provided for a new piece of learning and ways to effectively model and demonstrate the learning (both content and process, incorporating metacognition). We then explore the importance of independent practice, gradually and appropriately reducing levels of direct and guided support. Following this, we delve into differentiated questioning to check and strengthen understanding. This is the 'catch-all' session that examines the lesson structure in its entirety. At the end of the course, teachers will leave excited about returning to the classroom to try out the new approaches and strategies.
The other L&T courses available break these component parts down and explore them in much greater detail.
