Every teacher’s core aim is to enable students to learn, but they also have a passion for their subject and wish to instil this same passion in their students. As a result of this, does every teacher actually recognise or acknowledge their role in the promotion or improvement of Literacy? Without Literacy no student can adequately access the curriculum, nor be successful in their learning. As Wilshaw stated, Literacy is a ‘Shared Responsibility’ and ‘Every teacher in English is a teacher of English’ (Sampson, 1921).
In order to develop this mindset and culture of Literacy as a whole school and shared responsibility, this course provides strategies and information to support teachers in all subjects to promote and embed Literacy. The course explores the concept of Disciplinary Literacy and methods to incorporate/make Literacy more explicit in their teaching.
